Engineered Concrete Solution for Livestock Barn Operations
A Multi-Phase Installation Featuring a Tined Non-Slip Floor, Central Divider Wall, and Exterior Approach Pads
Nissen Concrete executed a comprehensive, multi-phase concrete overhaul for a cattle barn, designed specifically to enhance animal safety and operational efficiency. The project included a new, fully-tined interior floor for maximum traction, a central divider wall for herd management, a raised pad for a water tub, and two large exterior approach pads to eliminate mud at entry points. Despite weather challenges, the project was completed seamlessly, resulting in a durable, safe, and highly functional facility built to withstand the rigors of daily agricultural use.

Project Scope: The client required a complete concrete upgrade for their existing cattle barn. The primary goals were to improve safety for the livestock, create a more manageable environment for herd separation, and increase the cleanliness and durability of the high-traffic zones. The project was planned in multiple phases to ensure proper curing and construction sequencing.
Challenges & Solutions: The project timeline required work during a period of inclement weather. Our team demonstrated adaptability by shifting focus to the interior work during a rainy day, pouring the main barn floor without any delays to the overall schedule.
The primary challenge was engineering a solution that addressed the specific needs of housing livestock. This required more than a standard flat pour; it demanded features designed for animal welfare and farm logistics. Our solution involved several custom elements integrated into the pour:
A consistent, deep-tined finish across all surfaces to provide critical traction for cattle.
Forming and pouring a structural divider wall to allow for effective herd separation.
Creating durable exterior pads to solve the common agricultural problem of mud and erosion at barn entrances.
Key Features:
Tined Anti-Slip Floor: The entire 12-yard interior floor was finished with a grooved, tined texture to provide excellent footing for cattle and prevent slippage, even in wet conditions.
Reinforced Divider Wall: A cast-in-place concrete wall was poured down the center of the barn, providing a permanent and robust solution for separating livestock herds.
Raised Water Tub Pad: A dedicated raised pad was integrated into the floor to elevate the cattle water tub, keeping the water supply cleaner and containing spills.
Exterior Approach Pads: Two large concrete pads were installed at the main entry/exit points of the barn. These pads provide a solid, non-slip transition for the cattle and prevent the surrounding area from becoming muddy, improving both animal cleanliness and site accessibility.
Outcome: The completed project transformed the barn into a modern, safe, and highly efficient agricultural facility. The non-slip floors significantly reduce the risk of injury to the livestock, while the divider wall and clean approach pads streamline the farmer's daily operations. This installation is a prime example of Nissen Concrete's ability to deliver specialized solutions that are not only built to last but are also thoughtfully designed for their specific, demanding environment.
