Rock-Solid Artistry: The 100-Ton Foundation of a Perfect Pool Deck
Integrating Complex Structural Backfill with Artisanal Stamped Concrete for a Backyard Oasis
Nissen Concrete designed and installed a custom stamped concrete pool deck that required significant structural preparation before the pour. The project's success hinged on the meticulous installation of over 100 tons of stone to create a stable, level base over challenging terrain. By focusing on this critical foundational work, we ensured the longevity of the artistic surface. The final result is a beautiful, multi-toned stamped concrete deck that provides a durable, safe, and visually stunning finish to the client's backyard oasis.

Project Scope: The client's vision was to create a high-end, resort-style pool deck to complete their backyard renovation. The project required a custom-stamped and colored concrete sidewalk that would fully surround the new pool, providing ample space for lounging and entertainment. The key objective was to create a surface that was not only beautiful but also exceptionally durable and safe for a poolside environment.
Challenges & Solutions: The most significant challenge was the existing ground elevation and soil composition around the excavated pool. A simple pour would have resulted in sinking, cracking, and an unstable deck over time.
To mitigate this, our team engineered a robust solution involving major structural backfilling. We brought in and meticulously compacted over 100 tons of aggregate stone in lifts to build up the sub-base. This process created an unshakeable foundation, eliminated voids, and provided proper drainage—critical elements for a long-lasting poolside installation. This focus on the sub-surface preparation demonstrates the Nissen Concrete commitment to building beauty that lasts.
Key Features:
Structural Base: Over 100 tons of compacted aggregate stone used as structural backfill to guarantee a solid foundation.
Concrete: Utilized 4,000 PSI integrally-colored concrete to provide a rich, consistent base color throughout the slab.
Reinforcement: The entire deck was reinforced with a grid of steel rebar to prevent separation and control cracking.
Stamping & Coloring: A decorative stamp pattern was applied, and a secondary color release agent was used to create depth and an authentic, textured look.
Sealing: The finished surface was treated with a high-gloss, non-slip sealer to protect against chlorine, UV rays, and weather, while enhancing the vibrant colors.
Outcome: The client now possesses a stunning and structurally sound pool deck that serves as the centerpiece of their backyard. The artistic stamping and coloring provide a high-end aesthetic, while the unseen foundational work guarantees it will not shift, sink, or crack. The project successfully transformed the space into a safe, functional, and beautiful oasis, exceeding the client's expectations for both form and function.
